Two day course gaining "hands-on" experience repairing and restoring an authentic Cotswold building using traditional lime mortar techniques

Course description: This course is designed for those wishing to grasp some of the basic skills of working with lime mortar. The course will look at lime putty and hydraulic lime, sands and the use of horse hair. Mixes and recipes for different applications.Hands on experience of pointing, plastering, (onto stone and laths)  rendering, and stone repairs. We will look at mixing and applying limewash and mixing colours.

The course takes place on and within a dilapidated gardeners cottage in the old orchard on the Ebworth estate. One of the important objectives of the courses being held here is to repair the fabric of the building so that your work will be available for subsequent courses to learn from. This is an intense course which will be tailored to meet the requirements of the participants where possible.

 Notes and Limitations

  • The course is partly outside and so you should be prepared for all weather conditions
  • Lime doesn't come off clothes easily, if at all, and you will get some lime on you.
  • The course is aimed at home owners and beginners, the instructor will pass on many tips and tricks as well as the usual established techniques. However, it does not seek to be  definitive or prescriptive and so some content may contradict what you may have already been learned elsewhere


Sally Elwood has extensive lime mortar experience and this course offers a small window into her knowledge. You won't become an expert over the weekend but you'll know more about one of the most important materials in the history of building and how it easily be used on your own building.

What do you need to know: No prior knowledge or experience is required. This course is ideal for those who have very little knowledge of lime mortar and want to learn more!

What to bring on the day: All materials and equipment provided. You will need to bring appropriate clothing, hardwearing footwear and a packed lunch & drink.

Times: Arrive 9:45am for Start: 10.00 am, Finish 4.00 pm (approximately)

p> In response to an increase in lime mortar restoration, the Cotswolds Conservation Board are expanding the number of locations where these courses are held. Preparation is ongoing in this regard, and accordingly, the final location has not been determined. However, this location will be confirmed by mid May at the latest, and will be within the Cotswolds AONB, most likely, the central section of this area.
