Spend a day learning the age old art of straw thatching.

Course description: This practical course is designed as a taster to introduce you to the skill of wheat straw thatching.  During the course you can expect to learn about: a brief history of thatching, the materials used, splitting hazel to make fixings, methods of fixing a thatch coat onto a traditional wooden roof and trimming eves and gables using traditional tools .This process of wheat straw thatching will be demonstrated to show how it is done and then participants will be able to have a go themselves.

What do you need to know: No prior experience required. This course is ideal for those who have little or no experience of wheat straw thatching and want to learn more!

What to bring on the day: All tools and materials will be provided. All you need to bring is appropriate clothing, footwear, packed lunch and a bucket full of enthusiasm.

About the Instructor: Dan Quartermain is a professional Master Thatcher and runs his own thatching business based in the Cotswolds. With over 20 years experience in this traditional rural craft, what Dan doesn't know about thatching probably isn't worth knowing.
