Map and Compass - Beginners

Learn the skills needed to find your way across the Cotswolds.

Course description: This course will introduce the basic skills of map and compass work as well as a chance to put it into practice. The day will consist of an indoor session followed by a practical session outdoors, which will involve a gentle 4 mile afternoon walk. Areas covered during the day include marginal information on the map, conventional signs and symbols, grid references, distances, contours, planning a route, the 'Sylva' compass, bearings, action when 'Getting lost',safety in the countryside and much more!

What do you need to know: No prior experience required. This course is ideal for beginners or for those who have been walking for a while and keep getting lost!

Instructors: David Gardyne and Colin Boulton who are Cotswolds Voluntary Wardens and have been running the Map and Compass courses for many years, always pointing people in the right direction.

What to bring on the day: Maps and compasses will be provided, although you are welcomed to bring your own. Appropriate clothing, footwear and packed lunch & drink required.
